An Open Letter to Moms on Vacation

Hey Mom,

I want you to know that if you’re on vacation and reading this, you are not alone. Whether you’re hiding in the bathroom, reading on your phone in the dark while you try to breathe silently so you don’t wake the kids, or – mercifully – enjoying a cocktail and a moment of what vacation is supposed to be, I’ve been there too.

Maybe you packed for two, three, four, five – God forbid more than five people – all by yourself, while your partner clipped his toenails. Or decided it was a good day to re-organize the garage. Maybe when you arrived, he asked where the toothpaste was. And despite going over every list, and checking it twice, you still forgot that one thing. It almost goes without saying that you made vacation plans that you were sure your family would love, but you could hardly even think about them over the screams of, “Are we there yet??”

One of the BEST parts of the summer ending and the kids going back to school is the kids being gone finally getting to go back to school shopping. There is nothing I love more than getting tha list of everything my kid needs, heading to Target and buying only things that are on that list everything in the store. Let’s face it, backpacks and lunch bags and new markers and pencils and pencil boxes are all thrilling, but don’t we deserve a little something too?

Yes, yes we do.

Unfortunately, school isn’t going to send you a list of everything you need. That’s what we’re for. Check out our list of Back to School items for YOU and then get yourself all geared up for the first day of school!

The Five Stages of Baby Model Rejection

As a Mom, I’m contractually obligated to think my kids are adorable. The cutest kids in the world even. So when I look at my stunningly beautiful children, I do so with the awareness that I’m wearing some serious Mom-colored glasses. I don’t gush about it because the real world may see them through normal glasses and think, “Meh.” But when your bestie, who also happened to have a stint as a Mom to a real life baby model, says, “Hey, have you considered sending in her pics to a modeling agency?,” you think maybe your kid really is as cute as you think she is!

Of course, being a baby model is more than just being cute. And it’s a whole process to get into the game, but thankfully the bestie was there to hold my hand and walk me through the process. So I followed her advice, got some bright solid colored outfits and bought myself a Groupon to the JCPenney portrait studio and crossed my fingers. We got some great shots so I nervously – but somewhat confidently – went to the websites for some reputable local youth talent agencies and submitted my daughter’s pictures.

It wasn’t even 12 hours later before I got our first rejection email. I was immediately thrown into the five stages of baby model rejection. Should you find yourself thinking about entering the cutthroat world of baby modeling, you should be ready to experience all of these feelings as well. (But I’m sure you won’t – because your kid is adorable!)

The Dark Side of Having Kids That Are “Great” Eaters

There are two kinds of toddlers: the kind that are super picky eaters and the kind that aren’t. And there’s a ton of helpful information out there to help your picky eater. Which is awesome! But as much as having kids that won’t eat anything is a major PITA, I’m here to tell you that having kids that eat EVERYTHING isn’t that great either. So whether your kid is a human garbage disposal too, or you just want to feel better about your situation, here are five things that are major downsides to having kids that everyone considers to be “great” eaters.

Before you get too jealous of your friends whose kids eat everything, read this! #pickyeaters #kidsthateateverything #foodiekid #kidfoodies #minifoodie #littlefoodie #kidsmeals #kidseatveggies #kidseatfruit #getmoreveggiesforkids #momlife #dadlife #foodbtattles #eatingoutwithkids

4 Fun Things You MUST do While Pregnant (and One Responsible Thing)

The Salty Mamas received a 4 month supply of Morning Pep Prenatal Vitamins as compensation for this post. While they did supply the sample and sponsor this post, all opinions – sweet or salty – are the true opinions of The Salty Mamas! Enjoy!

Once you’re pregnant, there’s a lot you need to do. And don’t worry about forgetting to do any of it, because people will be reminding you the entire time. Some of it is the stuff that everyone will tell you about, like picking names, making a birth plan and preparing the baby’s nursery. And yes, you need to do that stuff too, but you should also make sure you’re doing stuff that’s really for YOU. Here’s some stuff that we NEVER heard anyone telling us we needed to do while pregnant, but we’re the kind of friends that will keep it real and tell you what you should actually be focusing on. Plus, one responsible thing, because apparently now we’re the adults and need to make good choices or something.

There are a million checklists of all the things you need to do before baby gets here, but don't forget to add having fun to the list! Here are some fun things you should do! And one responsible thing for good measure. #pregnant #pregnancy #prenatalvitamins #morningpepprenatals #morningpep #nesting #whattodowhilepregnant #babyregistry #whattoputonbabyregistry #pregnancychecklist #pregnantchecklist #whattoexpect #expecting #firsttimemom #firstpregnancy

The Ultimate List of Must Haves for a Day at the Pool with Kids

It’s that time. The weather is warming up, the beach is calling and the community pools are opening. My kids spent the last seven months staring wistfully at our pool knowing it was way too cold to enjoy. Now they run to the gate excited every afternoon to get jump in. When we bought a house with a pool, I pictured casual afternoons spent by the pool watching my happy children swim. I didn’t think about all the things they would need to make that happen. Over the years I’ve gotten it down to a pretty good system, but if this is your first (or second, or seventh) summer spent at the beach of the pool and you feel like you still don’t have it all down yet, don’t worry. The Salty Mamas have got you – and your kids – covered with these must haves for a day at the pool!

Pool Days need SO much more than swimsuits and towels. Luckily The Salty Mamas have you covered with this list of everything you need for a fun and successful day by the pool! #poolday #swimday #swimsuit #toddlerswimsuit #swimdiapers #bestswimdiapers #bestgogglesforkids #stayhydrated #pooltime #summertime #pooldayfun #funaththepool #bestfloatiesforkids #bestpooltoysforkids #beachday #bestsunscreenforkids #summertimefun #summertimevibes #schoolsoutforsummer #summerwithkids #toddlersummer #babysummer #babyswim

Mother’s Day Fantasy vs. Mother’s Day Reality

I’ve got a Mother’s Day hangover. And not the good kind that implies that I spent the entire day relaxing and drinking too much champagne. No, I’ve got the kind where I find myself asking, “What happened yesterday??” Now, I’m not the kind of person that traditionally builds up holidays. I’ve never had high expectations for a life changing New Year’s Eve. I’ve never thought that Valentine’s Day was going to be the most romantic day of the year. But somewhere along the line I saw one too many Mother’s Day commercials with happy kids showering their Moms with love, crafts, coffee and breakfast – even if it was poorly, yet comically, made with egg shells hidden in the omelet.

That was not my Mother’s Day. And as I scrolled through Facebook, I started to think maybe I was the only Mom that didn’t have that picture perfect Mother’s Day….crafts everywhere, Moms thanking their families for the outpouring of love, and me feeling more and more empty. Then I remembered I was on Facebook and decided to go to Twitter, where complaining is more accepted. And I found my people.

But you might be my people too. So here’s what I fantasized for Mother’s Day, and how my day differed dramatically.

What happens when your Mother's Day Fantasies just don't happen?

Kids' Activities

Mommy, Can Boys Do Ballet?

Part of parenting is realizing that there are 43,000 potential activities you can enroll your child in. The next critical part is realizing that time is finite and you really need to pick two or three of them and say no to everything else. As such, we’ve spent the last five years having discussions with our kids about what interests them, where their talents lie, and how they want to spend their time. Last year, our then 2 year old proudly declared that she wanted to do “ballallet.” Inside, my heart SOARED with joy as I pictured her following in my less-than-comfortable toe-shoed footsteps. Outside, I kept it simple, “Sounds good baby!” And so we waited for her to turn three to enroll in the nearby ballet studio.

Fast forward to last month, as we drove by the studio and my son said sheepishly, “I wish boys could to ballet.” I nearly slammed on the brakes as I found his sullen face in my rear view mirror and said, “Well of course boys can do ballet!” Still quietly, but with a tremor of hope, he replied, “Really?” I assured him they could, which prompted a follow-up question: “Okay, but do they have to wear pink?” Which is when I realized this was going to be a very long conversation. Over the next several days we discussed boys and ballet from lots of different angles.

So if you have a boy that’s interested in ballet, you may have to tackle some of these as well. Here are the top five things we had to address before my son was comfortable with signing up for ballet.

Have a son that's interested in ballet? Love Letters to Our Kids Favorite Cartoons

So screen time may be taboo, and the ultimate sign of a terrible parent is leaning too much on the friends that live inside the television. But sometimes Mommy just needs a little help. There is still laundry to do, dishes to wash, and watching a little TV makes way less mess than Play Doh does. So the Salty Mamas make zero apologies about sprinkling in a little (or some days a lot) of screen time here and there. Which is how our kids favorite cartoons, become our favorite cartoons.

We’d like to take this moment to publicly thank some of the cartoons that have helped us get through these past five years.

5 Breastfeeding Myths Debunked

Between the two of us, the Salty Mamas have breastfed 4 out of 5 kids. But if you lined all 5 of them up, you’d never be able to pick out the one that was Team Bottle. Despite all the warnings I received about the myriad things my child would miss out on if I “gave up” on breastfeeding, my firstborn seems to be doing just fine. Which isn’t to say that I wasn’t absolutely terrified of what I now know are breastfeeding myths. Cole and I are proof positive that you can survive – and thrive – on bottles and formula. Here are some of the myths about breastfeeding that I am thrilled to debunk for you.
