Survive (And THRIVE) with these Working Mom Life Hacks

Our newest contributor, Kayci, joins us again with her best working mom life hacks. Read on for ways to find out how to make life easier as a working mom.

When my son was a baby I was a stay at home mom. I grew vegetables, cooked every meal from scratch, kept a clean house, and did all kinds of craft projects. I mean, he was an easy baby, so take that for what it’s worth. But still, I prided myself on staying top of all of this and never forgetting anyone’s birthday and sending thank you cards in a way that would make Emily Post proud. I really had it all together.

And then circumstances changed, and I returned to the workforce. And then I realized I did not have it all together. Not at all.

Over the past six years I have gone through a lot of trial and error, a lot of beating myself up, and a lot of compromises to make it work while, well, working. Last year I had a baby girl (note: NOT an easy baby) and now I’m in the thick of it with two kids, a household to run, and a full-time job. I’ve created some working mom life hacks and found some ways to make life easier as a working mom; some are minor, but all have a major impact.

So whether you’re looking for ways to make being a working mom easier, or just need a little encouragement, you’ll find something just for you in this list of working mom life hacks.

Stay Organized with The Working Mom Command Center

Need help getting your busy life organized? If you’re juggling kids, a partner, and a career, consider setting up an easy working mom family command center to get everyone on the same page!

You’ve been there. You have one too many things on your plate as a working mom, and the guggling just isn’t working for you anymore. A ball is going to drop- you know it’s coming- but it feels like there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

One frantic night, I was switching through calendars, emails, and to-do list apps trying to remember what my son needed to bring to the Flag Ceremony volunteer thank-you breakfast at school (which, honest to god, is a real thing. Working mom organization ain’t for sissies).

I turned to my husband and told him that I was nearing a nervous breakdown. I explained that just trying to stay organized as a working mom with all of the STUFF that keeps our family running was taking its toll and making me seriously anxious.

Frustrated woman with head in hands on a couch with clothes and toys spread around.

His infuriatingly logical response was “Why don’t you write it on a calendar?” I blinked, stunned. “What, like on paper?” I asked. I’ve seen so many working mom organization tips featuring apps and electronics, so going back to paper-and-pencil seemed like a giant step backward.

But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. At work I have my giant desk calendar, my notepads full of lists, post-its stuck to every visible surface. Why couldn’t I do the same at home? And with further thought, I realized that the other thing I needed was for my family to start taking responsibility for some of their own mental load and lessening the burden on me to be the keeper of all the information.

And so I started what I know now is the ultimate in working mom organization tips- the “working mom command center.”
