Sing’s Pig Mama is Every SAHM, EVER.

Recently, as part of the Regal Kids’ Summer Movie Club, we headed to the theater for a cheap showing of Sing. I don’t know about you, but I tend to use my kids’ TV time as get-as-much-work-done-as-possible time, so I’d never actually seen the whole movie. Sure, I’ll get down to the part where Meena rocks out at the end, but otherwise, I come and go throughout. Not this week. This week, I was forced to sit and watch as Mama Pig Rosita sat there on the screen, strumming my pain with her fingers for a full two hours (no really though- what’s with that crazy dull stretch three quarters of the way through the movie? It took SO MUCH POPCORN to keep Abe occupied during that part). If you are a Stay at Home Mama, then you might have noticed before what I am just noticing now- Rosita the Mama Pig is ALL of us.

How did I not notice before- Rosita from Sing is every SAHM- EVER. Laugh along with our too-real comparison at TheSaltyMamas.com #momhumor #humor #funny #hilarious #parenting #momlife #sahm #sahmlife #sing #rositafromsing #kidsmovies

Building the Perfect Sandcastle- A Create a Castle Review

Looking for the best way to take your beach game up a notch? If your kids get frustrated by their attempts at building a sandcastle, you’re going to want to check out this Create a Castle review. Does Create a Castle really work? Read on to see!

There are a few quintessential truths about summer. There will be lots of sticky kids covered in popsicle juice. We will eat our weight in watermelon. And we will spend loads of time at the beach. Having sworn to never take for granted how close we live to the ocean, we often load the car up with all the kids, chairs, snacks, and toys our SUV can hold for a day at the bay.

My kids each have their own favorite beach activities. Izzie loves to stand at the waters edge and jump and splash – before making a mad dash into the water to try to prove that she can swim. Evie is content to lay on her towel, surrounded by snacks enjoying the sun. And Cole? Cole begins each trip to the beach with his never-ending quest to finally build the perfect sandcastle.

Tragically, no matter how many buckets and shovels and sifters we take to the beach, there will be waves of disappointment when my son just. can’t. get it. right. Try as he, and we, might, we just have not figured out how to build the perfect sandcastle.

Which is why we maybe freaked out with excitement when we found Create A Castle.

What is Create a Castle?

Founder Kevin Lane was as frustrated as Cole with the traditional bucket and pail method of building a sandcastle. He decided to figure out a way to make it easier, more successful, and most importantly to us, more kid-friendly. And did he ever! Here’s our Create a Castle Review of the Pro Tower Kit.

Summer Learning Activities for Kindergarten & Preschool

Need to keep that brainpower up during summer break? Go for less stress (and more fun!) with these fun summer learning activities for kindergarten and preschool kids.

On a beautiful summer day, we were soaking up the sun while drawing in our backyard. My friend’s son, age 6, decided he was going to write a book.  He casually asked Lila, age 5 and a recent TK graduate, if she knew how to spell the word “like.” “K….L…E…” she started, and then looked at me in a hot panic. “MOMMY!!! I don’t remember ANYTHING from TK!!”

I mean, she did, of course, and with some reminders to say the sounds in the word, her memory was jogged enough to produce the letters. But her fear of summer reading loss was real. And it reminded me that we should probably spend a little time on some summer learning activities for kindergarten.

So if you also find yourself with a child entering PreK, TK, Kindergarten, or First Grade, it’s worth putting just a little time into some fun summer learning activities for kindergarten or preschool readiness. Here are some fun ways to make it happen without stressing your kids (or you!) out.

Keep their skills fresh this summer! Practice reading, math, and writing with these fun summer learning activiites at TheSaltyMamas.com. #summerlearningactivities #summerlearningloss #summerreading

The Five Stages of Baby Model Rejection

As a Mom, I’m contractually obligated to think my kids are adorable. The cutest kids in the world even. So when I look at my stunningly beautiful children, I do so with the awareness that I’m wearing some serious Mom-colored glasses. I don’t gush about it because the real world may see them through normal glasses and think, “Meh.” But when your bestie, who also happened to have a stint as a Mom to a real life baby model, says, “Hey, have you considered sending in her pics to a modeling agency?,” you think maybe your kid really is as cute as you think she is!

Of course, being a baby model is more than just being cute. And it’s a whole process to get into the game, but thankfully the bestie was there to hold my hand and walk me through the process. So I followed her advice, got some bright solid colored outfits and bought myself a Groupon to the JCPenney portrait studio and crossed my fingers. We got some great shots so I nervously – but somewhat confidently – went to the websites for some reputable local youth talent agencies and submitted my daughter’s pictures.

It wasn’t even 12 hours later before I got our first rejection email. I was immediately thrown into the five stages of baby model rejection. Should you find yourself thinking about entering the cutthroat world of baby modeling, you should be ready to experience all of these feelings as well. (But I’m sure you won’t – because your kid is adorable!)

One Year Blood Draw Show Anemia? Here’s How You Can Help

Did your child’s one year blood draw show anemia? You’re not alone- and you’re NOT a bad parent. It just happens. And, luckily, there are plenty of ways to increase your child’s iron intake and get those numbers back on track in no time.

At Lila’s routine one-year-old blood work, we got the news that she was anemic.  She refused to eat any meat, baby cereal, eggs, or bread, so I can’t exactly say I was surprised with the results, but I was still very overwhelmed and unsure what to do next.

I took a beat to freak out (my baby! something is wrong with her blood! and now she’s ANEMIC!) and then I did my research. There are supplements your child can take, but you also need to address your baby’s nutrition. You’re going to have to find a way to add more iron-rich foods to your toddler’s diet.

Unfortunately, if your kid is anything like mine, they got themselves into this situation in the first place by being too dang picky to actually eat the iron-rich foods you’ve supplied. So how do you get a baby to get enough iron when they HATE all the iron-containing foods?

If you find yourself asking the same question, please don’t let your child’s blood test results scare you. There are lots of simple, easy ways to add more iron to your baby’s diet. Check out our tips below to get your child’s iron levels up to par in no time!
